Komen Race for the Cure on October 19, 2014

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in October!

The Hawaii Dietetic Association is currently forming a team of members who would like to participate in the:

What: Komen Race for the Cure

When: Sunday, October 19th (Kapiolani Park: check-in ends at 6am, run/walk starts at 7am)

Who: Hawaii Dietetic Association members

Why: Help spread awareness about breast cancer and raise research funds for a cure for breast. This gives us an opportunity to get together for a little morning exercise!

Hurry and register for our team “Hawaii Dietetic Association” on the Susan G. Komen Hawaii website. Early bird registration ($25) ends in mid-August, so register today! Regular registration will be shortly after at a price of $30.

2014 Hawai‘i Food Day Update

Food Day

Food Day is a nationwide celebration of healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food and a grassroots campaign for better food policies.

Here is the Food Day 2013 Campaign Report.

If you haven’t already, please get in touch with us (Emily Caras, RD or 202-777-8368) to share with us your ideas and plans for Food Day 2014.

Among other planning, the organizations listed below are in the process of planning the following Food Day events and activities:

Sweet Annie:

  • Food Day Fair at Castle Medical Center
  • Food Day Exhibit at Waimanalo Country Fair

Hawai‘i Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier:

  • July 30 – Liholiho Elementary Open House – parents sign-up for Food Day and garden and nutrition activities (Aina in the School funded by Jack Johnson and the Kokua Hawai‘i Foundation) at Liholiho Elementary School, Honolulu.
  • August – 1 Food Day table sign-up and publicizing of Food Day at the Jack Johnson Concert, Waikiki Shell.
  • August 2 – Les Dames d’Escoffier Food Day Event – Country BBQ and Food Preserving Workshops – 11 am at a family farm in Punalu’u. Lunch and hands-on workshops in pickling, dehydrating, and earthworm composting. LDEI family friendly event including children and dogs!
  • October 17 – 8:30 to 11:30 – Family, Fun and Food Day – Liholiho School and Les Dames d’Escoffier, a morning of healthy tasting and movement for 650 students, parents, staff and teachers.
  • October 24 – Punahou School Food Day Garden event .

Hawai‘i WIC Program:

  • Fun activities for WIC participants that highlight “Eating Real”
  • A video demonstrating easy, healthy, on-your-own recipes using ingredients that participants can pick up using their WIC benefit checks that can be shown in their waiting rooms.
  • A distribution of Food Day recipe cards and educational information to WIC participants.
  • A “Food Raiser” event for the Hawai‘i Foodbank in which they collect donations used to purchase fresh produce by a local farmer which is then delivered to the Foodbank on Food Day.
  • A “Grow a Garden” featuring how to start seeds.
