President’s Update, Fall/Winter 2016

Aloha members,

Your Board has been very busy! It is my pleasure to update you on the latest highlights.

We are excited to announce that we have finalized our date for the 2017 Annual Spring Conference! Please join us on May 5, 2017 from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm in the Pomaikai Ballroom, Dole Cannery. Our CPI committee is working hard on selecting fantastic speakersIf you know of a great speaker or perhaps you would like to speak at our 2017 Annual Conference, please click here. All applications are reviewed by our CPI committee and speakers will be chosen by October 1, 2016. We would love to hear from you! Are you looking to sponsor a great organization? The Hawaii Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (HAND) is a state affiliate of the national Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. We are a non-profit voluntary professional organization representing over 300 Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. HAND members serve the public by promoting optimal nutrition, health, and well-being in a variety of settings and would love your support! Take a look at how you can sponsor the 2017 Spring Conference.

Ruby Hayasaka and the Public Policy Committee are offering a Public Policy Training Workshop on October 21 at 10:00 am at Castle Medical Center.  Go our website for complete details. Registration will open soon.

As the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) embarks on its 100th anniversary in 2017, the organization looks to its Second Century to chart a new vision for the future. Ann Ditzler, has volunteered to act as our Second Century Liaison. Mahalo!

The CPI committee has organized a fun social event at Oeno Winemaking on September 30th. Enjoy wine tasting and delicious appetizers sponsored by Blue Zones. This is a great opportunity to network with your peers. See you there! Cheers! Click here to register.

Membership levels at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics have declined. Being a member provides many benefits, such as CPE offered in the journal and access to the Evidence Analysis Library. Some RDNs have difficulty paying the academy dues. Why not ask your employer to pay your dues? Please click here for tips on how to get your employer’s assistance. Our nominating committee is in the process of preparing a slate of new officers for 2017. Please consider serving on the HAND board. We need your new ideas and fresh perspectives.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) are launching a medical home model called CPC+. If you work in a practice that is applying to participate, we encourage your involvement to ensure that nutrition care is included. The deadline is September 15, 2016. Click here for more information.

Our committees have finalized their meeting locations, dates and times, which is now available in the new Members-only area. Please feel free to attend any or all of the meetings. We appreciate your ideas and kokua! Our next Board meeting will be held at Castle Medical Center on October 27 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
