Description
Presenter: Lynda March, PhD, RDN, LD
More than 1 in 7 Americans have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and 90% of these individuals do not know they have it. Without management early in the disease progression, outcomes accelerate toward renal replacement therapies. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services remain the primary payors for this service and with the support of a Presidential Executive Order termed Advancing American Kidney Health, more attention is place on proactive disease management including increasing transplant organ availability and incentive to providers to manage the disease earlier due to the high cost of renal replacement therapies. Dietitians in many practice settings can influence CKD management by providing evidence-based nutrition counseling to slow CKD progression. The National Kidney Diet has been updated with new evidence and provides many patients with a clearer way to utilize food intake along with diabetes or hypertension management to slow renal function decline. This session will explore the current updates in research for CKD management and the National Kidney Diet nutrients of concern and tips on counseling patients.
